Though there is some linearity to Bloodborne, particularly in its early stages, you quickly learn that this isn't always the case, and eventually, you'll have about three paths open to you full of unexplored territory. I never understand people who die with like 50,000 Echoes in hand, there's never any need for that. After that, then you can sprint back to where you were. My rule is almost every time I can afford to level up, I do level up, and it's saved me a lot of headaches. Do not be afraid to sprint back through a level to spend your Blood Echoes before you walking into an ambush or die in unfamiliar territory. When you can effectively face them, do kill them, as many hold or guard very important items that will help progression immensely. First, as you go on the hunt for shortcuts, you will get frustrated trying to fight the same groups of enemies over and over again. Sometimes, Running Is the Best Possible Option If you can even FIND the Cleric Beast (you don't have to beat him), you can start leveling up with the doll in Hunter's Dream. You can also find a complete outfit down in the sewers on the floor level with rats. Save up Blood Echoes for your first set of armor (err, clothing), which will help a bit to mitigate damage before you can actually start leveling up.
